DISEASE AND CONDITIONS

disease and conditions

  • Adult Onset Hydrocephalus: The condition refers to excessive Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) building up with the fluid-containing cavities of the brain. This may increase pressure within the head. In reality, the CSF is a clear fluid around the brain and spinal cord that acts as a shock absorber and flows between the spine and cranium to regulate pressure within the brain.
  • Cushing’s Disease: The condition is a result of pituitary adenoma – a pea-size noncancerous tumour – that releases excessive Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in response to which the adrenal glands above each kidney release extra cortisol. As a result of this, there is a hormonal imbalance in the body.
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome: This is a serious brain trauma or brain injury in infants or toddlers due to forceful shaking. The syndrome destroys the baby’s brain cells and could cause permanent brain damage or even death due to lack of oxygen.
  • Central Cord Syndrome (CCS): This is known as an ‘incomplete’ traumatic injury as the patient is not completely paralyzed and there is weakness in the arms and legs. This is the result of an injury to the cervical spinal cord and is primarily seen in people with existing arthritis changes in the bones of the neck.
