What is Pediatrics?
Pediatrics originated from Greek which means ‘Healer of Children’. It is a branch of medicine that deals with newborns, children, infants, and early adolescents. A person practicing pediatrics is called a pediatrician.
A pediatrician provides medical care for children with acute or chronic illnesses. They manage the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the children and help them with healthy growth and development.
Being a pediatrician is not an easy task. A child needs a lot of care and love to cure their health issues. For example, most children are scared of injections, it is a pediatrician who cares for the child with patience and treats them in the right way with the right medicine.
Some Common Types of Pediatric Diseases
Here are some pediatric diseases are listed below:
1. Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infection is also known as bladder infection. It is caused due to the presence of bacteria in the urinary tract. UTIs are quite common in babies. The common symptoms include having an unexplained fever, irritability, vomiting, loss of appetite, poor weight gain, blood in their nappy, and babies crying a lot.
In such a situation, it is recommended to go for a test and then according to the reports, the treatment is recommended.
2. Common Cough and Cold
Children are more prone to common coughs and colds than adults as their immune systems are still developing. It is caused by an infection and sometimes recovering from the virus becomes difficult.
The common causes of cold and cough are blocked or runny nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting, and many more. It is vital to visit a pediatrician if it lasts up to ten days.
3. Bacterial Sinusitis
Sinusitis in children can look different than sinusitis in adults. In kids, sinusitis is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms may also be caused by other problems, such as viral illness or allergy. Thick yellow-green nasal drainage for at least three days in a row, headache, sore throat, bad breath, nausea, cough, vomiting, swollen eyes, and several other symptoms indicate pediatric bacterial sinusitis.
4. Roseola Infantum
Roseola infantum is a common viral infection caused by temperature and rash in infants and young children. The herpes group generally causes it but does not cause other herpes infections like cold sores. As a symptom, Roseola causes sudden high temperatures which lasts between three to five days.
Sometimes red rashes can develop when your kid's temperature returns to normal. The rashes are rarely seen on the face but they do appear on the body and spread to the arms and legs. You must consult a pediatrician if your child is lethargic, has wet nappies than usual, and has a fever that does not get better after 48 hours.
5. Chickenpox
Chickenpox is a viral infection that causes itchy rashes and fever with spots all over the body. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). This virus leads to a painful skin rash called shingles (herpes zoster) later in life. The kids who are vaccinated against chickenpox are less likely to develop shingles when they are older.
You must consult a pediatrician if your child has a fever that lasts for more than four days, severe cough or breathing trouble, or experiences severe headache, trouble walking seems very ill, and symptoms alike.
6. Mumps
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by the mumps virus, which belongs to a group of viruses known as paramyxoviruses. The illness starts with mild symptoms like headache, and fever and then leads to severe swelling in certain salivary glands causing puffy cheeks and a tender swollen jaw.
You must visit the pediatrician as soon as you see your child has symptoms of mumps. It spreads very easily and five days after the swelling starts also inform the clinic before you visit.
